One year ago, we organised a Concours in the gardens of the Villa Bologna in Malta. After molte reflection, we decided that this was a perfect place to enjoy forty of Malta’s best classic cars, in elegant surroundings. Participants were asked to dress in period costume, and visitors had to adhere to a dress code. It was a fabulous affair that will probably never be seen again in Malta, as it entailed a lot of work to organize, and not many thanks were forthcoming.
But the best form of flattery is imitation, and that is what happened at the Villa d’Este on Lake Como recently. Just like our Concours in Malta, classic cars were exhibited in the grounds, and the only people who were dressed badly were the press photographers. The Concours was held over two days. On Saturday it was at the Villa d’Este, a fairy-tale hotel on the edge of the lake. This is the BMW corporate day, so the flip-flop and t-shirt tourists simply could not get in. Those of us who were not jetted in by BMW had to fork out such an amount of money for tickets that we would have had the right to dress badly. Fortunately, none of us could easily put our hands on such unsuitable attire, so apart from the journalists, everything was perfect.
The next day, the Concours moved down the road to the Villa d’Erba, which is in fact a faceless conference center with a large piece of land to display the cars. But after the experience of the previous day, we simply moved on to Lake Garda for another couple of days.
The photos tell the story…
