I have just abandoned The Labyrinth of the Spirits on my Kindle, not halfway through. Not because it is a bad book. But because it is glorious, and every few pages I want to put a bookmark or write something in pencil in the margin. I will buy a hardback edition. And start again.
I imagine that the original manuscript is nothing short of fantastic. But Lucia Graves, the translator into English, is a writer and artist in her own right. To capture and transform such books into another language as she has done is an art form. Could I humbly suggest that you read this series of novels? They portray the murky but exciting life in Barcelona from the late thirties to the late fifties.
- The Shadow Of The Wind
- The Angel's Game
- The Rose Of Fire
- The Prisoner Of Heaven
- The Labyrinth Of The Spirits
Read then in order. Not all are memorable, but each will lead you on to the next. All deserve to be read. Some are exceptional.
