I have just abandoned The Labyrinth of the Spirits on my Kindle, not halfway through. Not because it is a bad book. But because it is glorious, and every few pages I want to put a bookmark or write something in pencil in the margin. I will buy a hardback edition. And start again.
I imagine that the original manuscript is nothing short of wonderful. But Lucia Graves, the translator into English, is a writer and artist in her own right. To capture and transform such books into another language as she has done is an art form. Could I humbly suggest that you read this series of novels? They portray the murky but interesting life in Barcelona from the late thirties to the late fifties.
- The Shadow Of The Wind
- The Angel's Game
- The Rose Of Fire
- The Prisoner Of Heaven
- The Labyrinth Of The Spirits
Read then in order. Not all are memorable, but each will lead you on to the next. All deserve to be read. Some of them are exceptional.
